SMS Seal

by Christina Brooks

Victoria was battered and beaten and only 3 days old when she was found in the Mediterranean. But with a little help from MO-m and a lot of care she has been released into the wild with her own mobile phone so she can text home and let the people at MOm know how she is doing.

Victoria is a Mediterranean Monk Seal. These seals are on the critically endangered list, there are less than 600 left in the wild. The biggest danger to them is the impact of man on their range - from commerical hunting during the Roman and Middle ages and their eradication by fishmen because the seals damage their nets.

This video from the national geographic tells Victoria's story from her rescue by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Monk Seals (MO-m) to her release back into the wild. Spend 6 minutes with Victoria and the MOm team - click on the link.

Did You Know?

The world's oldest cartoonists' organisation was founded in Australia.

The Australian Black and White Artists' Society was founded on the 17th of July, 1924, by a group of cartoonists meeting in a room in the Royal Arcade, Sydney

The society soon became a club and then in 2000, it formally changed it's name to the Australian Cartoonists' Association.
