NSW Local Council Elections - pick me, 'cause I care!

by Sylvano Lucchetti

When you go to the polling booths this Saturday, what will sway your vote for your local council representatives? Do you even know who they are?

Well, to assist you in this complex task, the electoral commission of NSW has web based access to facsimiles of every candidates information sheet. And it is very informative.

Take for example, Charles Sarkis, who wishes to represent the people of Parramatta. He is a self employed floor and wall tiler and he has indicated that he wants to better Parramatta. And? Well actually there is nothing else to add to his political aspirations or justifications for civic office. But don't be too hard on him, because Clover Moore thinks it sufficient to note under her employment that she happens to be the Mayor of Sydney and that's it. She provides no other supporting information as to why she should hold this civic office. And unlike Mr. Sarkis Clover Moore doesn't provide her date of birth on the form. But to be fair to both of these candidates, that whole section of the form is optional anyway.

Be that as it may, when you peruse the full list of councils and candidates, you will easily find that some candidates see the form filling exercise as something a little more than a bureaucratic formality.

For example, I am impressed by Sharon Johnson who wishes to be elected to Cobar Council. Her Information sheet is more what I would expect from someone who has a passion for holding civic office, stating that:

"Active member of Cobar Show Society Inc, 1st Female President duration of 3 years. Service Co-ordinator of Food + Transport Service at Department Ageing, Disability + Home Care. Co-ordinator of 1st Cobar Senior's Expo 2007. Previous President Cobar Red Cross. Past long association with Cobar Little Athletics + Cobar Auto Club. I have demonstrated ability to work with aged care/health, tourism, community organisations + events. I believe People in Cobar Shire are entitled to improved services + facilities without being disadvantaged by distance. And accountability of council to the community at all levels."

So before you head off to vote, take a moment to review the information sheets of your local candidates as a part of your decision process. Hand writing style can as good a guide as any when it comes to voting for most people.

And good luck to Sharon and all the other candidates in Cobar and all other council areas across New South Wales who believe in accountability and delivering services to the people.

Blocking Instrusive Popup Ads

Most web browsers now have a button that allows you to "Block Popup Ads" and, as you expect, most creepy websites have found ways around these buttons. The good news is that, if you are using Firefox, you can install a Javascript popup blocker like NoScript which will nip those sites in the bud. It is completely free, and works.
